EVENT: Australia’s Foreign Policy in the Age of Trump

WHEN: Wednesday 5th April, 6pm-7.30pm
WHERE: Macquarie Room, NSW Parliament, 6 Macquarie St, Sydney NSW 2000

Please RSVP : Limited Seats

The public consultation period on the Government’s strategy for Australia’s foreign policy, the DFAT White Paper, came to an end in February. With virtually zero evidence of public engagement on the issue, it is not clear whether DFAT even wanted to hear from the public: the process was limited from the start.

However, there is an alternative voice in the debate on foreign policy in Australia. We invite you to hear from Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA, Australian Fair Trade & Investment Network (AFTINET), Jubilee Australia, AID/WATCH and the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) on what an alternative Foreign Policy Paradigm should look like.

MODERATOR:
Professor Frank Stilwell
University of Sydney & Evatt Foundation Council for Peace and Justice

SPEAKERS

This new paradigm includes an Australia that focuses on making the world a safer place through collective and non-nuclear security arrangements. Pursuing fair trade arrangements that benefit people, not just corporate interests. Becoming an exemplar of effective climate policy, both in international policy and at home. A beacon for democratisation and self-determination, and enabling development rights, not financial freedoms for speculators. Respecting human rights in all its dealings including the rights of refugees and asylum seekers. And a country that recommits to global targets for development aid by focusing Australian aid on addressing local needs, not Australian interests.
